New Kent Gymnastics Team ends 4th season with state titles

NEW KENT – Chalk covered hands, sweaty ponytails, and determination fill the gym at New Kent Gymnastics Center on a typical evening. Athletes train in recreational gymnastics classes, pre team, and various levels of competitive teams in the Junior Olympic and Xcel divisions. In four years, NKGC has built a team program that not only succeeds locally, but statewide. The results of this year's State competition shows that this growing program is truly developing athletes with grace, strength, showmanship, and technique.

Their first State Champion, LeeAnn Testerman won first on Floor Exercise for Level 4. She also placed third on Vault and fourth All-Around. Alex Crostic took home second on Balance Beam, third on Floor and third All-Around. Mackenzie Harper placed 6th on Floor. At the Level 3 State Meet, Afton Fults got 6th on Floor.

The Xcel State Championship Meet was another title-winning success with Hope Couch taking first on Vault and 4th All-Around. Ryan Griffith was second on Uneven Bars, Floor and All-Around. Cambell Coyle was second on Beam, third on Bars, fifth on Floor and fifth All Around. Hannah Couch placed fourth on Bars. BriNiya Glenn was fifth on Floor. Grace Chisenhall was third on Vault. Hailey Crusenberry placed fourth on Vault. Hannah Bradley was second on Vault and sixth on Bars and All-Around. Madison Schumacher placed third on Beam.

"When you have coaches, parents and athletes that are one with our purpose, it is easy to shape champions," says Teams Coordinator Dayna DeShazo, "We train not to win, but to conquer individual goals and then raise expectations again. It takes work ethic to excel in such a detailed oriented sport and I could not be more proud to share these moments with our team family."
