Among Bay Rivers teams, only New Kent threw for more yards than for which it rushed. Mechling has improved his footwork and grasp of the offense after throwing for 1,489 yards and six TDs a year ago.

One of the team's best athletes, Karaffa had three touchdowns among his 10 receptions a year ago, and led the defense with more than 100 tackles.

Has three years starting experience under his belt and brings two other key intangibles: a love of competition and contact. He's also stronger this year and will be a key factor on both sides of the ball.
Tackling must improve. This is the bottom line for the Trojans, who allowed averages of 40 points and 412 yards, to win some games. In Karaffa, Rodriguez and 230-pound lineman Wilson Gregory, the Trojans have a solid nucleus of talent and toughness that figures to result in some improvement.
Emphasis on conditioning. The Trojans were often competitive for a half, with much of the 27 points-per-game deficit coming as they faded in the second half. Rounds vows that a more fit team will take the field this season.
Meat on the hoof. That is not to say the Trojans won't feature some size. In sophomore twins Josh (6-5, 330 pounds) and Joe Dixon (6-5, 360), the Trojans boast the district's two biggest players. Throw in Gregory, Rodriguez and 260-pound Shane Whitlow and the Trojans have the biggest interior lines in the district.
Employing the double wing, along with bruising line and defensive play, Fred Birchett's Trojans were 132-60 on the field from 1988-2004, reaching two state finals.
