A youth fishing seminar is scheduled for 7-9 p.m. July 11 at Deer Park School in Newport News. The seminar will be limited to 200 participants – youths must be accompanied by adult chaperons. Governor’s Cup Chesapeake Bay Fishing Tournament director Tabb Justis will discuss his activity. Fishing tackle and techniques, tagging programs, saltwater and freshwater fishing regulations and boating safety will also be addressed. ENTRIES ACCEPTED

Entries are now being accepted for the Governor’s Cup, scheduled August 18. Entry fees are $15 for adults and $10 for youths 15 and under. The fee is $10 for adults registering with a youth. A variety of prizes are offered for catches of six different species. Area check points are Hampton Bay, Norview Marina in Delata, Smith Point Marina in Reedville, and Smithfield Station. HUNTER SAFETY

Hunter safety courses for this fall’s first-time hunting license buyers are now being offered by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. Call the Department at 367-1000 (Richmond) for the class schedule and site.

PUBLIC HEARINGS

Public hearings on the environmental impact statement and management plan for the Chesapeake Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve System are July 11 in Gloucester Point and July 12 at West Point. The hearings are for public comment on plans to set aside four York River sites for long-term research and monitoring.

TOUGHER PENALTIES

Persons convicted of illegal possession or use of controlled substances within Cape Hatteras (N.C.) National Seashore, Fort Raleigh National Historic Site or the Wright Brothers National Memorial will face a minimum fine of $1,000 – 10 times the minimum possible. Last year, Hatteras rangers handled 100 drug-related cases, more than any other park south of Virginia.
