MESA, Ariz.—Michael Phelps wasn’t swimming to win this time. He knew a butterfly stroke would give him no chance to beat some of the best swimmers in the world in Friday’s 50-meter freestyle at the Mesa Grand Prix.
But he seemed to get what he wanted, with a butterfly swim faster than the first half of his 100-meter effort Thursday night.
“It’s a decent time,” Phelps said.
With his time of 24.06 seconds, he finished 42nd in qualifying, meaning he did not make the cut for any evening races. He’s not scheduled to swim again in Mesa.
“I think it’s a good starting point, just getting some races under my belt,” Phelps said of the meet.
