Pittsburgh Pirates - PlayerWatch
C Russell Martin started Wednesday after sitting out the last two games of the regular season with a strained right hamstring. Martin limped noticeably when he hit a second-inning single. He is eligible for free agency in November, and the PNC Park chanted, "Re-sign Russ" when he batted in the ninth inning.
RHP Edinson Volquez was the starter and loser Wednesday night, giving up five runs on five hits in five-plus innings as the Pirates were routed 8-0 by San Francisco in the NL wild-card game. Volquez has now made two postseason starts in his career, and his team was shut out both times. Pitching for Cincinnati, Volquez was the loser when Philadelphia's Roy Halladay threw a no-hitter in Game 1 of the 2010 NL Division Series. Then Wednesday, the Pirates were blanked by San Francisco LHP Madison Bumgarner.
Chris Stewart was unavailable to play because of a bruised right wrist. He was injured in Sunday's regular-season finale at Cincinnati when he was struck on a backswing by Reds RHP Johnny Cueto.
1B/3B Pedro Alvarez, who played only once after Aug. 27 because of a stress reaction in his left foot, took swings off a batting tee Wednesday. Alvarez is optimistic that he will be completely healed by the start of spring training.
