CCBC-Dundalk sophomore Kylin Sims (Dundalk) was awarded the Rawlings Gold Glove as the best defensive first baseman in the National Junior College Athletic Association's Division II. He was also named the Region XX Defensive Player of the Year.
Softball:Maryland pitcher Kerry Hickey was named to the All-ACCAcademic team for the third time in her career. Hickey, the 2011 ACC Pitcher of the Year, graduated second in Maryland history in strikeouts (663) and appearances, and third in wins (55) and innings pitched (596).
Football: Lindy's College Football preseason magazine ranks Navy 57th out of 120 teams.
Local college players highlight D.C. United Under-23 roster
D.C. United's U-23 team begins its inaugural season against Fredericksburg Hotspur on Tuesday.
The team's roster includes players from local colleges including: Loyola's Daniel Ankrah, Phil Bannister, Mike Deasel; Maryland's Billy Cortes, Matt Oduaran and Paul Torres; and Towson's Chris Fenner and Marco Mangione.The squad's head coach is United legend Jaime Moreno, who spent 14 seasons with the club, and holds team records for games played (329), goals (131) and assists (103). The Bolivian also holds the all-time MLS goal record, having scored 133 times in his career.
Capitals: The team re-signed goaltender Dany Sabourin to a one-year, two-way contract extension. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
IronBirds:: Aberdeen beat Hudson Valley, 7-2, in its season opener Friday night. Left fielder Austin Knight (Boys' Latin) went 3-for-4 with an RBI, and designated hitter Joe Velleggia (Calvert Hall) had an RBI double.
Cheerleading:: UMES' Allyson Brinson was awarded the ECDC Cheerleading Scholarship by the Encore Cheer and Dance Championship LLC. Brinson has been named a captain for the 2011-2012 season.
