Phelps is sixth in 200 free at Charlotte UltraSwim
In a field loaded with six Olympians, Michael Phelps of Fells Point came in sixth in the 200-meter freestyle final Friday at the Charlotte UltraSwim in Charlotte, N.C. Ryan Lochte was in front early but eventually fell to fourth behind winner Dominik Meichtry, a Swiss Olympian, at Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center. Phelps finished in 1 minute, 51.04 seconds in Lane 1, behind Meichtry's 1:48.55. In second was 2008 Olympian Ricky Berens; Markus Rogan finished third in 1:49.47. Missy Franklin (200 free, 1:57.66), Rebecca Soni (100 breaststroke, 1:05.57) and Dana Vollmer (100 butterfly, 57.82) set meet records. The Charlotte Grand Prix will continue today, with Phelps expected to compete in the 200 fly. On Sunday he is lined up to swim in the 200 backstroke.
Hanafin's single lifts UM past N.C. State in ACC quarterfinal
Junior Bree Hanafin hit a walk-off RBI single to left field in the seventh inning, and the third-seeded Maryland softball team beat sixth-seeded North Carolina State, 4-3, in the Atlantic Coast Conference quarterfinals in Atlanta for its first ACC tournament win since 2007. The Terps will play second-seeded North Carolina at 1 p.m. today in the ACC semifinals. Senior Kerry Hickey started for the Terrapins (39-16). She pitched six innings, allowing six hits and three runs while notching four strikeouts.
Honors: Hickey was named ACC Pitcher of the Year, while junior Vangie Galindo earned a spot on the All-ACC first team with Hickey. Hanafin was named to the All-ACC second team. Hickey is the first Terrapin ever to win ACC Pitcher of the Year and first to win an individual award since Kelly Shipman won Player of the Year in 1999.

Arnold pitches two gems, but Howard eliminates Eagles
Rebecca Kirshner singled in the winning run in the top of the 10th inning and Carly Martin outdueled Paige Arnold as Howard defeated Coppin State, 1-0, at the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference softball tournament at the Ormond Beach (Fla.) Sports Complex. Arnold opened the day with a one-hit, 1-0 shutout of Norfolk State. Coppin State finished the season with an 18-16 overall record, the first winning season in school history.
