Michael Phelps won the 100-yard freestyle for his second individual victory at the U.S. short-course national championships.

Phelps and Olympian Jason Lezak raced stroke for stroke to the wall, with Phelps touching first in 41.14 seconds.

Lezak, who at 32 is 10 years older than Phelps, finished in 42.46.

"These guys all have better turns and speed than I do in a short-course pool," Phelps said.

Phelps won the 200 free and led off his team's American-record victory in the 800 free relay on the first two nights.

"I'm ahead of where I thought I'd be right now," said Phelps, competing in a meet for the first time since breaking a bone in his right wrist in October. "I'm happy. It's a steppingstone to next year."

Phelps, of Rodgers Forge, will spend three weeks training at altitude in Colorado Springs, Colo., after Christmas and then await the birth of his nephew early next year.

"He's going to be getting some swimming gear from me," he said.
