National 4-H Week celebrates the accomplishments of 4-H youth during the week of Sunday-Oct. 7. The theme for 1995, “4-H … More Than You Ever Imagined,” reflects the variety of 4-H programming and the diversity of the lives and backgrounds of 4-H youth throughout our nation.

Youth participate in a wide variety of research-based project areas such as horse and pony, leadership, citizenship, environment, foods and nutrition, wildlife and public speaking. Clubs and projects are led by trained adult and teen volunteers. The 4-H organization is the youth development component of Virginia Cooperative Extension and is part of the two land-grant universities in Virginia – Virginia Tech and Virginia State.

There are a variety of ways to join, including:

* Organized 4-H clubs – an organized group of youth with volunteer leaders, elected officers and a planned program.

* Special interest groups – short-term groups such as environmental education workshops and 4-H camps, which are residential camping experiences at one of the six 4-H camp sites in Virginia.

* School enrichment – Classroom groups which use 4-H project materials to complement and supplement the school curriculum, such as plants, embryology and self-care series.

* Individual members – Youth doing 4-H project work, with parental guidance, where no organized 4-H program is available.
