New Kent High's 23 3-pointers in a recent 99-67 win at Poquoson set a Bay Rivers District boys basketball record. The number also put the Trojans high on the state and national charts.
The National Federation of High Schools record book lists Stuarts Draft as getting a state-best 26 treys in a game against Buffalo Gap in January. Stuarts Draft needed 71 shots to set the record, while New Kent was a vastly more efficient 23-of-43 in the win over Poquoson.
While Stuarts Draft leads the all-time state list, Atlee hit 25 in a 2007 game, according to the Virginia High School League Record Book, so New Kent appears to be No. 3 on the all-time state list. Only 15 teams (plus Atlee) are listed with 24 or more in a game in the NFHS record book, so the Trojans could be as high as No. 17 all-time nationally.
Blake Kelley hit nine 3-pointers in the Poquoson game and Christian Block four for the Trojans. Most 3-pointers ever in a game for a team? Meadow Heights of Missouri made 36 in 2006 game, shooting 75 treys overall.
