Are you happy? Steve Sarkisian, the loser from the U DUB, the new head coach for USC? When the first loss comes, next year, the boos will ring darkly across the Coliseum.
"Ring darkly across the Coliseum." Did you steal that from a Harlequin romance? I may actually borrow that line for my new novel based loosely on a college football team from Ohio that comes west to play USC: My working title is: "Fifty Shades of Scarlet and Grey."
You don't know whether Sarkisian is going to be a bad head coach any more than I know he's going to be a good one.
In the old days, before the Internet, you'd have sit down and write "boooo" in a letter to the editor, lick the stamp, and hope the local paper ran it Saturday.
I actually agree with what Sarkisian said at his news conference: "Let's evaluate this hire a few years down the road."
But who has that kind of time?
Sarkisian's teams at Washington were mediocre at best and he never won more than five conference games in a season if I'm correct.
He also never lost to UCLA and Notre Dame in the same season. Most years, a USC coach is on the hot seat if he loses to Notre Dame and UCLA, but Trojans fans gave coach Ed Orgeron a pass on the two most important games on USC's schedule.
That's fine. I like Orgeron too. I would have strongly considered making him the permanent coach if he had defeated Notre Dame or UCLA.
He didn't beat either one. More disturbing was the way USC lost to UCLA. The Trojans had all the momentum going into the game but were played off their feet by the Bruins.
Steve Sarkisian head coach at USC? Don't make me laugh. You already made me cry.
I was actually trying to make you sneeze.
Feels right? Wow, how could anyone say that after what the CEO has been through with this team and program? CEO had the locker room and fans behind him, good or bad, and that's what is needed in a program.
Wait, there was a chief executive officer running USC football the last two months? Oh I just got the CEO: Coach Ed Orgeron.
And, to be clear, I don't think I used "feels right" in my story on Sarkisian. That headline was written by a copy editor who might have graduated from UCLA.
If you want to make the Sarkisian hire more sexy take his name out of it. Insert "John Doe" next to his qualifications and remove his name. His resume is exactly what the Trojans wanted and needed. Between you and Gary [Klein], you guys both pegged this hire. Good reporting.
