A: I think had both quarterbacks ended up at Oregon there would not have been enough "Johnny Footballs" to go around.
Q: How do Northwestern fans live like this? Every game is either the greatest win or the worst loss ever.
A: Almost half my journalist friends attended Northwestern and this has been a rough year for "The Purple People Press Box Eaters." It was almost easier when Northwestern fans knew it was going to be crummy every year because the expectation level was low. (Think nearby Chicago Cubs fans.)
The Wildcats under Pat Fitzgerald are talented and entertaining, though, and the kings of roller-coaster drama.
Nothing compares to the recent overtime loss at Michigan because Northwestern had that game locked up before a Hail Mary pass set up the tying field goal in regulation.
This play just kills me in college football. With time running out, a defender should never allow a receiver to catch a Hail Mary because in college the penalty for pass interference is only yardage.
The NFL penalty is a spot foul at the scene of the crime, but in college a defender should just tackle the receiver in exchange for time off the clock.
Northwestern defensive back Daniel Jones, instead, tried to knock the ball away from Michigan receiver Roy Roundtree, who maneuvered for the brilliant catch.
"I was thinking: Aw, I could have just tackled him and taken the flag," Jones told Chicago Tribune reporter Teddy Greenstein this week.
College players need to have this drilled into their heads before it costs their team a possible trip to the Rose Bowl.
Q: Maybe Nick needs to stop [complaining] about the spread offense and start running it himself!!
A: My guess is the only "spreads" Alabama Coach Nick Saban will ever care about involve summer-home properties and cream cheese.
Q: San Jose State's bowl prospects? Currently they are 8-2 overall, 4-1 in the Western Athletic Conference (having lost to Utah State). They have two (tough) games left: Brigham Young and Louisiana Tech.
A: The Spartans have been under the radar all season mostly because they play in San Jose and the WAC is going out of the football business after this season. That said, third-year Coach Mike MacIntyre has done a nice job positioning the program for its move to the Mountain West.
Brad Edwards of ESPN.com has San Jose State playing Kent State in the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl (Detroit) on Dec. 26.
Sounds like a great way to spend Christmas.
The good news is I hear the player gift bag contains build-your-own pizza kits that include pepperoni, tomato sauce and cardboard.
