Edward Morrow's legs already were aching by the second quarter of Simeon's 75-37 victory at Carver on Monday evening.
The 6-foot-7 sophomore had a good excuse. Just before the varsity game, he scored 13 points to help the Simeon sophomores pull off a 52-21 victory. He returned to the court to total 17 points and four blocks in the varsity victory.
He was allowed to play in six total quarters of play between the two games, Simeon coach Robert Smith said.
"It was really a killer on my legs coming out on the court," said Morrow, who had 18 points in Simeon's victory Saturday. "My mind-set was just to come out and do my best on the court.
"I felt pretty good, and my team kept me pumped."
The Wolverines (3-1) were playing without seniors Kendrick Nunn and Quron Davis, who were serving a one-game suspension from an incident in which Simeon players removed their shoes and placed them on the court following the Class 4A state championship last season. Senior Jabari Parker also sat out as he recovers from a fractured right foot.
The absences didn't matter much. Morrow scored 10 first-half points and Simeon took a 34-17 halftime lead over Carver (2-6) while using all of its players. Led by starters Jaylon Tate and Russell Woods, Simeon went on a 19-2 run to start the third quarter. Morrow, who said he is being courted by multiple schools but doesn't have any offers, returned later in the half to score seven more points. That included turning a D.J. Williams assist into a one-handed dunk that resulted in a three-point play and a big Williams smile.
"We just didn't come out strong enough, and we backed down in the second half," said Carver junior Henry Tiggs, who scored 13 points. "(Morrow) was pretty big. We just have to work our way up. But he's good."
Player of the game: Edward Morrow, 17 points, 4 blocks.
Key performers: Simeon — Jaylon Tate, 14 points, 3 steals; D.J. Williams, 11 points, 6 rebounds. Carver — Henry Tiggs, 13 points.
