Q: I’d like the names and addresses of publications for stamp collectors – ones that carry ads or even addresses of individual collectors. H.K., Gloucester.
A: Here are the suggestions of two experts: Reed Walton, whose Hampton shop deals in coins and stamps, and Herb Holland, former secretary-treasurer of the International Society of Worldwide Stamp Collectors. Consider the following:
* Linn’s Stamp News, P.O. Box 29, 911 Vandemark Road, Sidney, Ohio 45365. Telephone (513)498-0801. This publication, now in its 65th year, includes ads for buying and selling stamps. A year’s subscription costs $33.
* Stamp Collector Newspaper, P.O. Box 10, Albany, Ore. 97321. Telephone (503)928-3569. Stamp Collector, publishing since 1931, has a classified section as well as display ads. The editor and publisher invites interested readers to drop a line with a request for a free sample of the paper. A year’s subscription costs $29.90.
To reach Holland’s group, write International Society of Worldwide Stamp Collectors, Route 1, Box 69A, Caddo Mills, Texas 75135. This organization operates the ISWSC Sales Circuit and the OMNI Stamp Exchange, programs through which members can sell or trade their stamps. Yearly dues are $5.
Q: On May 24, the Daily Press printed a review of “Light on the Hill, a History of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill” by William D. Snider. I’d like to have the book but have not been able to locate it in any local bookstores. Can you find out where I can get a copy? J.H., Newport News
A: I, too, made a couple of calls to local booksellers and also failed to find it on their shelves, although you can special order it. You also can get the book directly from the University of North Carolina Press, the book’s publisher, but you will have to pay shipping. To go this route, and if you will be paying by VISA or MasterCard, call (800) 848-6224. This hard cover book sells for $24.95. Add $3 shipping/handling per address. If you are ordering more than one book, but the order goes to the same address, the shipping charge remains $3.
To purchase by check, make the check out to UNC Press for the book cost plus shipping and mail the check and your name and address to UNC Press, P.O. Box 2288, Chapel Hill, N.C. 27515-2288.
Q: Several weeks ago, I read your column item about the Tidewater affiliate of the National Council for Children’s Rights, a children’s advocacy and support group working to protect the best interests of youngsters of divorced, separated or unwed parents. My son lives in Indiana. He has been looking for a chapter of the group in Indiana. Can you get me the address of the national group, so he can find a group close to where he lives? B.H., Hampton
A: Although I’m going to supply you with the address of the national organization, which is “trying” a new name, the Children’s Rights Council, I’m told there are several chapters in Indiana. Good luck to your son:
* The Indiana Council for Children’s Rights, P.O. Box 2348, Indianapolis, Inc. 46206. Telephone (317) 685-4656.
* Children’s Rights Council, 220 I St. N.E., Suite 230, Washington, D.C. 20002.
