Police say dump truck driver was following too closely when he hit NK school bus

NEW KENT – A dump truck driver that struck the back of a school bus in Eltham earlier this month has been charged with following too closely.

Virginia State Police recently charged Randy White, 53, of Gloucester, for following too closely after his 2006 Volvo Dump Truck rear-ended a New Kent County School bus on Route 33 near Route 273 (Farmer's Drive) in Eltham.

According to State Police Public Information Officer Sgt. Thomas Molnar, White was traveling on Route 33 on Dec. 11 around 3:30 p.m. when he struck the bus, driven by Stephanie S. Parrish, of Providence Forge. One student, a 14 year-old female, was onboard the bus at the time of the accident.

White, who was wearing his seatbelt, was not injured in the crash.

Parrish was also wearing her seatbelt, but was transported to the hospital with minor injuries. The student also suffered minor injuries and was later transported to a hospital, Molnar said.

White was released on a summons and will appear in New Kent County General District Court on Jan. 8 at 10 a.m.
