Counterculture is a term affixed to a movement, group or individual who leads a lifestyle that is opposed to the prevailing culture.
The Robertson Family featured on the popular A&E's Duck Dynasty is referred to as a "wildly popular television program with a countercultural message" in an article written by Tim Minnery, Senior Vice President for Government and Public Policy for the American Family Association.
One of the things that mark the Robertson family is their featured daily blessing at the beginning of their family meal which is featured at the end of the program.
To pause before every meal and thanking God is truly "counter cultural" in our society today. It has become a dinosaur as far as the potential for extinction.
It is so very near and dear to my heart, and I am sure to the heart of God, when someone stops before they eat and thank God for His provision. Wouldn't it be wonderful if our children knew that to be a way of life with no exceptions?
No matter where I am, it always moves me to acknowledge God's goodness in that brief moment. It is a great testimony to others that all things come from Him. God would have us to model that same discipline for our children and shape them to assume that is just what we do. It draws attention to the Lord when this happens at the school lunch table, or at a restaurant, or when our family table is always marked by a blessing to God for His provision just like the Robertson family. It is the things of which family traditions and family treasured moments are made.
Jesus modeled it for us in Mark 6:41a (NLT) Jesus took the five loaves and two fish, looked up toward heaven, and blessed them.
I encourage you and your family to always thank God no matter where you are or who you are with. This should be as natural to us as washing our hands before we eat.
