NEW KENT – The westbound lane on the Eltham Bridge has been reopened.
On the afternoon of September 7, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) discovered that a steel plate had shifted on the Eltham Bridge, which caused a gap several inches wide. As a result, VDOT closed the westbound traffic lane for several hours.
Traffic was rerouted using the eastbound lane for both directions, according to VDOT representative Kelly Hannon.
VDOT have not released what caused the bridge plate to shift.
