NEW KENT – Five people were without a home last week after their Quinton trailer caught fire, and now neighbors are lending a helping hand and seeking donations.

Two adults and three children are currently receiving assistance from the Red Cross. The family evacuated their mobile home, located on Dispatch Road, after a fire broke out at 5 a.m. on Aug. 27, the New Kent Fire Department reported.

A friend of the family, Diane Leonard, is now accepting donations, including small appliances, furniture, clothing, shoes, and money, to help replace items lost in the fire.

Neighbor Tammy Elmore said that the family is staying in a hotel and searching for a more permanent place to live.

Though the fire units from New Kent, Henrico, and West Point got the fire under control within 25 minutes, the family lost everything, Elmore said.

According to the fire department, one occupant sustained a minor injury while exiting the home, however he not did not want to be transported to the hospital and instead was treated on scene by emergency medical staff.

New Kent Fire-Rescue personnel are still investigating the cause of the fire.
