The Bay Rivers Buccaneers 12U youth football team competed in the NPFA (National Prep & Youth Football Association) National Championships last weekend at Hermitage High School in Henrico. The 12U Bucs won the D4YFL Spring Football championship going undefeated and beating the Henrico Seahawks 35-32 last June.
Bay Rivers opened the Championships against the Lake County Storm from the Cleveland, Ohio area. Lake County was also undefeated and had just won their league championship. It did not take long for the Bucs to get on the scoreboard as QB CJ Reeders on the Bucs first play faked the jet sweep and kept the ball going off tackle for 57 yards and the games first touchdown. Reeders would also throw for 2 touchdowns, the first on a 46 yard strike to Josh Rice and later he would hit Evan Branch on a 62 yard TD pass. QB Michael Burt added another touchdown with a 27 yard pass to fullback Zach Morris. The Bucs defense was outstanding only allowing the Storm 1 first down for the game as the Bucs cruised to a 32-0 win.
The Bucs would come back Sunday morning to face the Chesterfield Giants in the semifinals in a driving rain storm. The Giants also undefeated and VAYFL champions defeated the Philadelphia Outsidaz 28-0 in their opener. The weather and field conditions coupled with some outstanding defense made it difficult for either team to move the football. It was a heavyweight slugfest with both defenses not giving an inch and the game went to the 4th quarter tied 0-0. The game turned after the Bucs defense had shut down the Giants again and was hoping to get the ball back with good field position. However a 59 yard punt pinned the Bucs inside its own 5 yard line. After moving the ball out to the 20 yard line on a couple of CJ Reeders runs the Bucs turned the ball over and 5 plays later on 3rd and goal from the 3 yard line the Giants scored the games only touchdown for the 7-0 win. Chesterfield would go on to defeat the Orange (NJ) Cyclones 27-6 in the Championship game to claim the 12U NPFA National Championship.
