WEST POINT – The Rotary Club of West Point was honored to recognize Erin Hayden as its Citizen of the Year recipient at its annual officer installation banquet at the Rose and Crown restaurant in New Kent. Erin was cited for the many charitable events she has organized. Always ready to help anyone in need, you might have seen her with the Blessed Sacrament Youth Group collecting food in front of Food Lion or leading a Zumbathon fundraiser at the Van Den Boogaard Center. She is a champion at promoting and collecting donations as well as leading fundraisers for families in need both locally and around the globe.
Some of the groups that have benefited from her efforts include the Good Neighbor Center, the Laurel Shelter, the YMCA and Because We Are Sisters. She has held fundraisers for cancer patients, led the Stop Hunger Now program and hosted fundraisers for the victims of the recent typhoon in the Philippines and Super Storm Sandy. Erin is a highly energized, self-motivated woman who does her work without expectation of acknowledgement, solely with the intent to benefit those in need. She has set an example for many by her contributions to our community, making it a better place in which to live.
The Rotary Club of West Point recognizes these efforts and has made a contribution to the Rotary Foundation in Erin's name. This contribution could provide educational opportunities, food for the poor, potable water in a village in Africa or India, health care, shelter, schools and books for thousands of children. It can buy cows to supply milk to an entire village or supply sewing machines to widows so they may become self-sufficient.
Erin was also recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow, joining a family of well over 950,000 Paul Harris Fellows worldwide. This fellowship was named after Paul Harris who founded Rotary in 1905. Besides members of the West Point club, Erin stands with notables such as Mother Theresa, Nelson Mandela, Kofi Anann, Indira Gandhi, and Luciano Pavarotti. The club also made a $150 donation in Erin's name to Stop Hunger Now, one of her favorite charities.
