NEW KENT – Two Williamsburg women have been arrested on charges of shoplifting and drug possession at the Providence Forge Food Lion.

Courtney Lee Stephenson, 26, and Emily Marie Bowles, 22, were arrested on Christmas Eve and charged with possession of a controlled substance (schedule I or II), possession of drug paraphernalia, and shoplifting after they were "acting suspiciously" inside the Food Lion, located at 9030 Pocahontas Trail.

According to the New Kent Sheriff's Office, Deputy T. Davis responded to a call that night from Food Lion management.

Davis's investigation revealed that the two women were "stealing merchandise from the store and in possession of suspected heroin," the sheriff's office said in a press release.

Stephenson and Bowles were transported to Henrico Jail East, where they were served with warrants.

They are scheduled to appear in New Kent County General District Court on Jan. 7.

Martin can be reached by phone at 804-885-0040.
