NEW KENT – Yvonne Jones, principal at New Kent High School, is stepping down after 14 years at the helm.

Jones announced Monday night at the School Board meeting that she was "stepping aside" at the end of the school year.

"I think it's time for someone else to take the reigns," said Jones.

"To the community, parents, and the staff, I can't than you enough for giving me the opportunity to be a part of your lives, and to help you grow, and to help me grow," she added.

"It's been wonderful here in New Kent County, I can't complain at all. And I just love these kids."

Jones has been in the education field for 41 years and will continue to do so, once she takes some time to spend time with her family.

"[Jones'] decision to retire, while not a surprise, challenges us to find an equally strong and personable instructional leader for our high school staff, students, and community," said School Superintendent Dr. Robert "Rick" Richardson, Jr. in an email Tuesday.
