NEW KENT – A Maryland man is behind bars after eluding police in New Kent County.

The New Kent Sheriff's Office received a report on Wednesday, Nov. 27 around 9 p.m. that a car was driving erratically on Route 106 (Emmaus Church Road).

When New Kent Deputy C. Bristow located the car and performed a traffic stop, the driver, 32-year-old Jose Angel Santiago, sped off. He turned from Route 106 onto Route 249 (New Kent Highway) and continued eastbound until he lost control and crashed into the woods.

Santiago, who was trapped inside his car, was extracted by New Kent Fire-Rescue and airlifted to VCU Medical Center for his injuries.

Santiago was released from VCU Medical Center the following day and was transported to Henrico Jail East, where he was held without bond for felony eluding.

Santiago was scheduled to appear in New Kent General District Court on Dec. 3 at 8:30 a.m.

Martin can be reached by phone at 804-885-0040.
