KING and QUEEN — The King and Queen Sheriff's Office is investigating two church break-ins that occurred last weekend.
"It looks like they were looking for cash," Investigator Kenny Jordan said.
New Morning Star Baptist Church, located on Greenbriar Road in Walkerton, was broken into sometime between 11 p.m. riday, Aug.8 and 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 9. According to James Taylor, program coordinator for the church, the custodian found the door to the church office kicked open when he arrived to work.
A table-top safe weighing about 150-175 pounds was stolen, Taylor reported.
Around the same time, thieves broke through the basement door of Bethlehem Baptist Church, located nearby on Route 14/The Trail. According to Jordan, the church was ransacked but nothing was taken.
"We've got a couple of items that we're going to process for fingerprints, but there are no leads at this time," he said.
The sheriff's office is asking anyone with information to call Mattaponi Crime Solvers at 804-769-3000. Callers can remain anonymous.
Lawson can be reached at 804-843-2284.
