NEW KENT – The Virginia Gems, based out of New Kent Gymnastics Center, came out champions at their first competition of their debut season.
The Old Dominion Beach Blast Cheer and Dance Tournament was held on Saturday, Nov. 23 at the Arthur Ashe Center in Richmond. Teams from all over the State competed for team titles. The Virginia Gems brought three teams to the tournament. Senior Level 3 team won first place in their division, the Junior Level 1 team also won first place and the Tiny (exhibition only) team received honorable mention.
"I couldn't be more proud of all the Gems for the dedication it took to have such a successful debut," said Teams Director Dayna DeShazo, "I can't wait to see what the future will hold for our many seasons to come."
"Finally an all star cheer gym near West Point," said Kelly Birchfield, resident of West Point and parent of a member of the Senior team, "The Virginia Gems have been a great experience. The girls have gained many new friendships and the coaches are very dedicated to their athletes."
The Virginia Gems started practices over the summer, they have participants ages 2 1/2 years old through teens. Tryouts for Season 2 are coming this January. The gym is located directly off of interstate 64, making it convenient for families to get to from the Williamsburg area. Teams are broken up by age and ability and all who tryout will be placed on a team. Current middle and high school cheerleaders are encouraged to tryout to build on their current skills and increase their difficulty in a safe way.
