The Islanders tally 15 hits and benefit from 11 errors in the quarterfinal rout.

After winning the Bay Rivers District tournament as the No. 4 seed, the Poquoson Islanders might have been concerned whether the hits would keep coming in Monday’s Region I quarterfinal.

Consider that answer an emphatic “yes.”

The Islanders scored early and often Monday as they blasted Caroline 19-4 to advance to Wednesday’s semifinal at Spotsylvania, 4-3 victor over Park View of South Hill.

Hits for the Islanders (16-8) did not draw too many gasps from the crowd, but were just in the right spots time after time. And there were 15 of them — along with 11 Carolina errors.

“Their coach complimented me on the way we were putting the ball in play and going with the pitches,” Poquoson coach George Yeager said. “They said they wanted to go inside and then tried to go outside with their pitches, but we kept hitting the ball into right field. Nothing really hard, but we kept finding ways to get on base.”

Poquoson started its scoring in the first on a sign of things to come for the Cavaliers, by reaching base on an error. Tyler Baker reached on a miscue and scored on an RBI single by Clark Pinder.

Pinder finished 3-for-4, and his brother Chad was 4-for- 5. Baker and Justin Bollinger added three hits apiece for Poquoson.

Freshman pitcher Kyle Crockett allowed six hits and struck out six in six innings for the win.

“For a youngster like him to start his first regional game, he pitched outstanding,” Yeager said.

Crockett added a hit and scored two runs in a nine-run fifth inning in which the Islanders sent 14 to the plate and took advantage of five Cavaliers errors.
