Pictures: West Point family's animal topiaries
The Phan family has an array of large topiaries, perennial plants, in shapes ranging from giant dragons to elephants to swans, in their front yard in West Point. Nguon Phan, who creates the topiaries, moved from Vietnam with his family nearly nine years ago. He was a botanist in his home country before becoming a landscaper in the United States. As a landscaper, Nguon Phan does not work winters and spends a great deal of his time during the colder season building the topiaries. He sculpts the shapes with wires and then grows the plants around the shapes, molding them into creation.
