Change.org -- the world's largest petition platform -- shows the 'Justice for Trayvon Martin' petition generated 2.2 million signatures, making it the most successful campaign in 2012.

The parents of Trayvon Martin, the 17-year-old gunned down February in a Sanford neighborhood, started the "Justice for Trayvon Martin" petition in March.

The petition called for an investigation in the case, as well as the arrest of the shooter, George Zimmerman.

Zimmerman is free on $1 million bail and is awaiting trial on a charge of second-degree murder in the fatal shooting.

Many people start petitions on Change.org because they tend to capture a wide net of users willing to sign petitions for causes that strongly affect them, their families or friends.

Change.org shows that 25 million people in 196 countries used the petition platform in 2012. The bulk of those users -- about 13.4 million -- were in the United States.

About 200,000 petitions were submitted to Change.org this year.
