Hidden hazard of crib bumpers
Crib bumpers are a staple in many babies' nurseries. But federal regulators have known for years that bumper pads pose a potential suffocation hazard. The companies that make the products have been alerted to the problem too, but no action has been taken. Now, in response to weeks of inquiries from the Tribune, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said it will re-examine the safety of crib bumpers. That includes reopening files on babies' deaths, evaluating the safety of bumper pads on store shelves and rethinking how investigators examine deaths where bumper pads are present.
