WEST POINT – The West Point High School drama team took first place at the 1A East Regional Theatre Competition, held at West Point High School, on Nov. 9.
Hosted by Cumberland High School, under sponsorship of the Virginia High School League (VSHL), eight teams from around the state competed from the newly-formed 1A East Region.
The West Point drama team is the first 1A East Regional Champions this year and West Point senior Lilly Acuna won the Best Actress of the region.
Teams included: Mathews, Chincoteague, Cumberland, Surry, Rappahannock County, Galileo Magnate School, Washington & Lee and West Point high schools. Many of these schools have never competed against each other until this fall, following the new alignment of schools.
Only the top two teams get to move on to compete at State Theatre One-Act Festival, held in Charlottesville on Dec. 2. Cumberland High School earned second place, while West Point won first place with "Cagebirds" by David Chapman. They will be competing against other one-act teams from other regions in Virginia.
The one-act team has been rehearsing since mid-September and has performed for a number of audiences in preparation for the competition. They won first place at 'Conference' competition on Oct. 29, which allowed them to compete in the regional competition. The team is now continuing to rehearse to prepare to perform for judges at the state level.
The West Point one-act team includes: Lilly Acuna, Alanis Ellingson, Paige Melton, Gi Gi Acuna, Hannah Zwerner, Kadi Carver, Cassi Tomiko, Autumn Hixenbaugh, Willow Pedersen, Katie Capps, Michael Getman, and Willie Daniel. James Dudley and Tyler Britt were the sound and light techs.
