Annual golf tournament to honor former New Kent teacher

NEW KENT – The third annual Sarah's Memorial Golf Tournament will be held on Friday, Sept. 26 at the Club at Viniterra. Funds from this tournament will go towards a scholarship for a graduating senior at New Kent High School in memory of former New Kent student and middle school teacher Sarah Lindsey.

Lindsey was raised in New Kent County, attended New Kent County Public Schools, graduated from The College of William & Mary, and returned to teach at New Kent Middle School from 2003-2007. She then pursued a graduate degree at NC State and taught at Franklin Academy in Raleigh, NC.

In April 2010, Lindsey was diagnosed with adrenal cancer which would eventually claim her life on Nov. 6, 2011. At only 31 years old, Sarah had a profound influence on all who knew her, especially her students, who she so adored. "Miss Lindsey's" students are today's New Kent High School students and college attendees.

The first two Sarah's Memorial Golf Tournaments were an overwhelming success that yielded over $50,000 toward a scholarship endowment at William & Mary. With such a response by the community, it is expected that this year's tournament will be even better with prizes and fun for all that attend. As an example, the first golfer that has a hole-in-one on the designated hole could win a new vehicle, donated by Ken Houtz Chevrolet of Gloucester.

The entry fee for the tournament is $400 per team of four which includes green/cart fees, goody bags, box lunch and a BBQ dinner at the end of play. A number of prizes will also be available. Registration opens at 11:30 a.m. with a 1:00 p.m. shotgun start.

Everyone is invited to register for this special event by contacting Patrick Evelyn at (804) 512-8150 or at pevelyn@verizon.net. Community support in the form of sponsorships (ranging from $100 to $1000) is welcome. Donations of any amount toward the scholarship or tournament will be graciously accepted. See you September 26!
