Virginia College in Richmond announces new Network Technician Program

RICHMOND – Virginia College in Richmond is pleased to announce the launch of its new Network Technician program at its campus located at 7200 Midlothian Turnpike. Enrollment opened in October, and classes will start in January 2014.

The Network Technician program is designed to prepare students for a technical career in the information technology field. Through this program, students will receive instruction on how to operate, install, configure, troubleshoot, upgrade and maintain personal computers and computer networks as well as basic network security.

"It's a pleasure to announce the start our new Network Technician program," said Thom Eastwood, Richmond campus president. "This new program will provide hands-on learning experiences to prepare future graduates with a solid background of practical training directly related to the computer/network service job markets."

This program will help prepare the students for the CompTIA A+, Network+ and Security+ certifications, in addition to the Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certification.

"Upon successful completion of this program, graduates should be able to configure wired and wireless networks, apply basic network security configurations and troubleshoot operating systems, among other skills," said Eastwood.

Completion of the Network Technician program can take as little as nine months. Some of the careers available in this field are help desk analyst, computer user support specialist or computer network support specialist. Professionals in this area will provide support for computer software and hardware, smart phones, tablets and other devices. According to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics 2012 wage data and 2010-2020 employment projections, jobs in this area are projected to grow an average to 10 to 19 percent.  The Virginia College Career Services team will assist students in developing job-search skills and open doors to employment for the ever-growing computer support specialist field.
