NEW KENT – Rotary District 7600 announced today that it had awarded a $5,000 grant to the Rotary Club of New Kent to help purchase a brand new Yamaha Baby Grand Piano for the New Kent High School Music and Preforming Arts Departments. Grants Chairman Bill Liepis said; "We are pleased to be able to assist the Rotary Club of New Kent in this community effort."
The piano was presented on September 30, 2013 in a 3:30 PM ceremony held in the NKHS Chorus Room. The presentation was made to Michelle Edwards, NKHS/NKMS Choral Director, the Choral Students and NKHS Principal, Yvonne Jones by Club President, Jackie Smith, the Club's Grant Coordinator, Stran Trout and a number of club members.
"Our New Kent High School Chorus students and I are thrilled to receive the gift of this beautiful piano. In the past we were not able to host events such as Area Chorus, or District Assessments due to the lack of a quality instrument. Having this new piano will allow us to grow as a department, and as a community," said Edwards.
The grant was supplemented with $600 from the Rotary Club of New Kent, $5,000 from the School Board, $3,000 from the New Kent Education Foundation and the High School gave the final $500.
Note: Rotary District 7600 is currently awarding Rotary Foundation District Grants to qualified Rotary Clubs throughout the district for Rotary year 2013-14. Twenty grants for a total of $92,000 will be distributed for community service projects.
