Take a peek inside The Farmer's Daughter, a southern home cooking-style restaurant which recently opened in West Point.

ELTHAM – Well butter me up and call me a biscuit - southern comfort food has come to the West Point area.

The Farmer's Daughter, located at 18950 Motel Drive (formally Sophie's) in Eltham, officially opened on August 24 and has been a delightful addition to the Town's varied cuisine.

"The public's response to the food has been overwhelming," said owner Lynn Little, the stepdaughter of a farmer. "We served 325 people the first day we opened. It was amazing."

Little opened The Farmer's Daughter not only to honor her stepfather, but also to create a warm, inviting, and delicious atmosphere.

"It is out of pure respect for him that I named this restaurant 'Farmer's Daughter'," Little said. "I respect him for being the man he didn't have to be."

"He worked very hard in his farming and we saw the end result: food on the table."

It's in this same vain that Little planned her menu.

"Everything in the restaurant is homemade and [we] use my recipes," said Little. "I took my grandmother's recipes, increased the quality of product, changed it a little, and put it on the table, much like they do on the farm."

The extensive menu at the Farmer's Daughter includes breakfast favorites all day long, as well as down home specialties, such as biscuits and milk gravy, chicken fried steak, slow cooked Boston butt, and fried catfish, just to name a few. The desserts, which include apple pie and bread pudding, are equally as impressive and like the other menu items, is 100 percent homemade.

The recipe quality is important to Little, but of equal importance are the quality of ingredients and reasonable price.

"All our ingredients are fresh, not frozen, and made from scratch," Little said. "I also want to serve good food at a good price."

Little often travels around the state to get the best catches or cuts. She must see, smell and choose what is offered at her restaurant and served to her customers.

"I don't want to put anything out that I wouldn't eat or give to my family," she said.

Her family has long been an inspiration for her culinary career. Little grew up cooking and helping run Patsy's, her mother's business, which recently relocated from Lanexa to Providence Forge (9311 Pocahontas Trail).

"I spent at least 20 years helping my mom out, and then one day I thought to myself, 'Hey, I can do this'," Little said. "Serving and cooking food is always what I've done."

The menu isn't the only thing that's down-home country at the Farmer's Daughter. The décor, provided by Shells Primitive - which is available for purchase - completes the theme.

"I want people to come and feel like they are in their grandma's house. They can just sit back, relax and enjoy the atmosphere, and of course, the food," Little said.

She recently made sure to pass down the warmth to some very special customers.

On September 11, all first responders were treated to a free lunch at The Farmer's Daughter.

"You've got to give back to your community or the community won't come see you. It's important," Little said.

The Farmer's Daughter currently offers free wi-fi in the restaurant and free delivery to local businesses.

And, it's open every day of the week:

• Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday: 6 a.m.-9 p.m.

• Tuesday: 6 a.m.-3 p.m.

• Saturday: 6 a.m.-10 p.m.

• Sunday: 6 a.m.-8 p.m. (Sunday from noon-8 p.m. the restaurant serves a "Sunday Supper" consisting of country style barbecue pork ribs, mashed potatoes, etc. for $9).
