The Visual Arts Committee of Arts Alive, Inc. proudly announces a schedule of exhibits and workshops through May, 2014.

Since 2004, the Visual Arts Committee has worked hard to provide talented artists in our community with opportunities to exhibit and sell their works. Community members are invited to bring their artwork to hang in each exhibit except the Invitational Exhibits for viewing by the public at the Robinson/Olsson Auditorium in West Point, VA. The Visual Arts Committee plans exhibits throughout the year to highlight local artists as well as workshops to offer opportunities to learn new art techniques. Co-chaired by Gail Nichols and Jeannette Wagner, the Visual Arts Committee only charges $15 plus any supply cost for these workshops which will all be held at the West Point Library. The workshops are open to adults and students ages 12 to 18 and fill quickly, so sign up soon!

Workshop instructors are artists from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts or local artists. Workshops from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts are supplemented by grants. The first adult workshop is on Thursday, September 5th from 9 am to 2 pm. Advanced Encaustics will be taught by Karen Elde, a Virginia Museum of Fine Arts artist. Participants will create paintings using the ancient process of melted beeswax. A second workshop will be held on Saturday, October 19th from 9 am to 12 pm. Scratchboard Drawing will be taught by West Point High School art teacher, Sue Kurfees. Participants will learn to create drawings by experimenting with lines on scratchboard. Scratchboard has a white clay layer covered by black ink. The drawing is made by scratching white lines through the ink with a sharp tool. A scratchboard drawing can be very detailed and resemble a wood engraving.
