Pictures: Matanzas -- the Little Fort by the Sea
The smaller cousin to St. Augustine's famous Castillo has a rich and important history. On the site of Fort Matanzas, in 1565, 250 French Huguenots were slaughtered by the founder of St. Augustine, Don Pedro Menendez de Aviles. As Florida celebrates it's 500th anniversary of discovery, this is a selection of images photographed January 27, 2013, at Fort Matanzas, whose namesake comes from the Spanish translation for "massacre."
