The minions are coming to a hotel room near you.
Universal Orlando announced that each of the 18 kids' suites at its Loews Portofino Bay Hotel are being renovated to feature a theme based on the movie Despicable Me, complementing the park's new Despicable Me Minion Mayhem ride.
The rooms are being "created to capture all the excitement and playfulness of Gru's house," the company said in a statement announcing the new room designs. Among the features: missile-shaped beds and Minions rappelling from the ceiling.
Family suites are becoming more prevalent in the Orlando hotel market. Disney's recently opened Art of Animation hotel includes 1,120 family suites themed after the movies Finding Nemo, Cars and the Lion King. Universal currently has 8 themed kids' suites in its Loews Royal Pacific Hotel modeled after the Jurassic Park movies, which are featured in Universal's Islands of Adventure theme park. Universal's Cabana Bay hotel, which is under construction, is slated to have about 900 family suites when its two phases are fully completed.
The Despicable Me suites will be available for stays starting Oct. 1, Universal said.
