St. Augustine's oldest inn built for defense

There's something new in the city in which "oldest" is practically a place name. The St. Francis Corp. is sponsoring a contest in which the prize is a two-night, three-day midweek escape in one of its two old and honorable inns, the St. Francis or the Casa de Solana. The contest involves writing a 250-word essay that begins: "A two-night getaway at the St.. Francis or Casa de Solana inns is my idea of a perfect romantic vacation because ... " Entrants must be older than 21; the deadline for entries is Aug. 30. Entries should be sent to the innkeeper of the St. Francis, Joe Finnegan, at 279 George St., St. Augustine FL 32084.

St. Augustine: B&Bs in the first city span three centuries

Only Disney World manages to cram more holiday happenings into December than St. Augustine, our nation's oldest city, settled by the Spanish 55 years before the Pilgrims set foot on that famous rock in Plymouth. There are parades and regattas, concerts and carolers, townsfolk dressed in the 18th century British manner, torchlight processions, military encampments and re-enactments, and candlelight tours of homes including some of those transformed to bed-and-breakfast accommodations.
