For the last two years, I've been burning up the freeways between San Diego and Santa Barbara, plying the highways between the desert and the mountains, sampling hundreds of restaurants, hotels, museums, beaches, parks, missions, biker bars, tea rooms, presidential libraries and comic-book shops. The result is a new, expanding version of "SoCal Closeups," an ebook (on Amazon) and iPad app (on iTunes) that gives you enough local travel ideas to cover 200 days -- nearly four years of weekends. (It's good for out-of-towners, too. And the app gives you more than 700 images from Times photographers.)

The Integratron, Landers
Q: Where can I take a sound bath, and will UFOs be involved?
A: At the Integratron, of course. It's a dome in Landers, about 20 minutes north of Joshua Tree. The guy who built it was hoping to communicate with extraterrestrials. That doesn't seem to have happened, but musicians have come to love it because of the amazing resonance inside. Joanne Karl, one of the owners, calls the sound baths "a kindergarten nap of the third kind." To bathe alone is $80. Two weekends a month, you can join a public sound bath for $20.
