Now it is the new year, and I can mend my ways. Here are some of my New Year's resolutions for travel mostly designed to save money -- or save you from false economies.

Resolution No. 2: But say yes to travel when it saves money
If I am going to fly during the winter (but not at the holidays), I'm going to Europe but maybe not to one of the big three (London, Rome or Paris). I'll check out such places as Berlin (airfares last month for late January were as low as $650 round trip on Air Berlin), Dublin ($705 on Delta) or Oslo ($828 on SAS). Those fares may be gone by the time you read this, but others may pop up. And yes, it's cold in those places in winter. But if it doesn't bother these zoo elephants in Berlin, it's not going to bother me.
