Fourth of July: Where to celebrate in the West
Independence Day in the West can be different from just about anywhere else. Jackson Hole, Wyo., celebrates with a shootout at noon (a re-creation, that is). Julian, Calif., mixes Clydesdales with mariachis in its hometown parade. And coastal California provides the ideal spot for fireworks shows. Here are places in the West to experience a great Fourth, whether you're seeking something hip, upscale, down-home or just plain around the corner.

Last year, the Big Bay Boom fireworks show over San Diego Bay turned out to be the Big Fizzle. The malfunction that set off all the firepower in 15 seconds drew international attention -- and an apology. Now organizers promise a truly spectacular show 9 p.m. Thursday that will shoot fireworks from six barges in the bay. Best viewing spots: Shelter Island, Harbor Island, North Embarcadero (there's construction in the area, so it's best to take public transit) and Seaport Village. Info: Big Bay Boom
