Michael Phelps, who won a record eight gold medals in the Beijing Olympics last summer, and several other Americans are in the middle of a two-week training camp at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif., for this summer's national and world championships. They're in the pool twice a day, at 7a.m. and 5p.m., and spent part of one day training with U.S. Navy SEALs. Phelps, a Baltimore resident, said all the scrutiny over a photo that surfaced in early February of him inhaling from a marijuana pipe hadn't taken away his motivation. Phelps was suspended for three months by USA Swimming and has lost two major sponsors. "Nobody would want to wish that upon him, I'm sure. He's obviously dealing with it in a way that he feels appropriate, and I'm not one to comment on whether it's right or wrong because I'm not with his management team."

February 2, 2009
In defense of Michael Phelps and his "youthful and inappropriate" behavior and "bad judgment," taken on its own, this is far from the worst slip-up ever by a national hero. This space surely isn't the only one in which the first reaction to the now-infamous photo - eight-time gold medalist from the previous Olympics with a marijuana pipe stuck in his grille - was laughter. Plus, his instant contrition and pledge to do better, along with his near-universal fame, likely give him a cushion a lot of other celebrities wouldn't get.
