The lights are low and the bass is thumping, but the cycle room at Rev Cycle Studio in McHenry Row is no dance club. Halfway into the studio's Rev60 Zen class ¿ a "fusion" of 40 minutes of cycling and 20 of yoga ¿ a dozen cyclists are pedaling (and sweating) hard, following instructor Esther Collinetti's demands to go harder.

Not sure what to expect, I signed up recently for my first class in barre, a combination of Pilates, yoga and ballet. I wasn't too worried about the physical challenge because I am a runner and in good shape. I've also danced and am no stranger to the ballet barre. But let's just say that neither of these activities quite prepared me for this class.

Every Tuesday at Glen Meadows Retirement Community in Glen Arm, residents wave wooden batons, sway their hips and move to the sounds of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, Rimsky-Korsakov's "Flight of the Bumblebee" and other classical music pieces. Members of Jeff Sherman's Fit Body Boot Camp are no strangers to sweating. Taught by personal trainer Sherman and his staff, workouts include intense boot camp-style exercises that rotate with every class. One class, you might be pulling ropes in a kind of tug of war; in the next, pushing sleds across the gym floor. "Some classes, ... I'm wiped out," said Susan O'Neil, an aesthetician at About Faces who regularly attends.

Meet retired kingergarten teacher Jaymee Farinacci and the yoga group offered by the Kingsville Recreation & Parks Council and the Baltimore County Department of Recreation and Parks. The downward-doggers aren't just concerned with their own holistic well-being — every month, they also work on a charity project. Among other accomplishments, the group has sponsored children for summer camp and raised funds for local libraries and a food pantry. "Yoga isn't just a physical workout, it's a spiritual workout, too," says Farinacci.

Meet Donna Wasserman and the self-proclaimed "Y Ladies" (and some male participants, too) who meet Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings at the Towson YMCA for cardio dancing. The class, divided into eight-week sessions, matches choreographed routines with a wide variety of music — Irish, country, hip-hop, big band, classical, R&B and more — for a low- or high-impact workout. Cardio dancing has been offered by the YMCA for more than 30 years, and some of the regulars have been jumping and twirling together for just as long, dancing their way through hip and shoulder replacements, marriages and remarriages, and the losses of loved ones.

Now that Michael Phelps is out of the spotlight, some other Baltimore residents have been challenging themselves to their own series of competitions. At the North Oaks senior community in Pikesville, a four-day Wii bowling battle began Monday. While there will be no gold medals handed out, the winner is assured if plenty of glory.

Four times a week at Millbrook Community Hall in Pikesville, the overhead lights are dimmed, the disco lights go on, the music starts and Dancematic Fitness gets the party started. Created by Patrick Parker, who leads each class from a stage at the end of the room so participants can easily see him, this is an hourlong workout that participants say is fun and addictive. And, they add, they're getting results.

Four times a week, groupies gather at the Garrison Forest School dance studio in Owings Mills to follow Samantha Satchell's high-energy choreographed routines that combine hip hop, jazz, burlesque, African, Latin, belly dancing, swing, bhangra and just about every kind of dance style you can imagine. No participant gets left behind. "If you get lost," class T-shirts proclaim, "just shake something."

About 18 years ago, a group of guys began working out together every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at the Owings Mills Jewish Community Center. As the years have proceeded, the group has grown some and also lost some members, but the reasons its members meet remain constant: They do it to stay healthy, but also because The Rat Pack, as they're known, is about friendship and sharing life's good times and tough moments.

The Marine Corps Mamas met while training for the 1990 and 1991 Marine Corps Marathon in Washington. More than 20 years later, they still gather every Saturday morning for a 5- to 7-mile walk and potluck breakfast. Rain or shine, the group has set out on a journey from Grace Cunningham's house in Timonium every week for about 12 years.
