The lights are low and the bass is thumping, but the cycle room at Rev Cycle Studio in McHenry Row is no dance club. Halfway into the studio's Rev60 Zen class ¿ a "fusion" of 40 minutes of cycling and 20 of yoga ¿ a dozen cyclists are pedaling (and sweating) hard, following instructor Esther Collinetti's demands to go harder.

Most workouts are built on the concept of getting fit, but they often lack a certain edge that distinguishes them from other routines. Jazzercise — a mixture of dance, resistance training, Pilates, yoga and kickboxing — combines exercising with an element rarely incorporated into workouts: fun.

Not sure what to expect, I signed up recently for my first class in barre, a combination of Pilates, yoga and ballet. I wasn't too worried about the physical challenge because I am a runner and in good shape. I've also danced and am no stranger to the ballet barre. But let's just say that neither of these activities quite prepared me for this class.

Members of Jeff Sherman's Fit Body Boot Camp are no strangers to sweating. Taught by personal trainer Sherman and his staff, workouts include intense boot camp-style exercises that rotate with every class. One class, you might be pulling ropes in a kind of tug of war; in the next, pushing sleds across the gym floor. "Some classes, ... I'm wiped out," said Susan O'Neil, an aesthetician at About Faces who regularly attends.

Among other accomplishments, the group has sponsored children for summer camp and raised funds for local libraries and a food pantry. "Yoga isn't just a physical workout, it's a spiritual workout, too," says Farinacci.

Cardio dancing has been offered by the YMCA for more than 30 years, and some of the regulars have been jumping and twirling together for just as long, dancing their way through hip and shoulder replacements, marriages and remarriages, and the losses of loved ones.

And, they add, they're getting results.
