The Toyota Highlander is not a minivan. It's used much the same way but lacks the convenience of sliding doors, easy ingress and egress, and easily accessible rear seats — all sacrificed for a self-conscious stigma. But the cost of cool is negligible and the marketplace has voted overwhelmingly in favor of SUVs over minivans.

Mazda has a reputation across its product line for making sporty cars that are fun to drive yet fuel efficient. Car enthusiasts preach the Mazda formula, but the slight price increase over comparable imports has kept the mainstream away from embracing Mazda the way it has Subaru and Hyundai.

The 2016 Discovery Sport, which goes on sale this spring, marks a new direction for Land Rover. It's part of what will become the Discovery sub-brand that is aimed at versatility while Range Rover models focus on refinement. Both model ranges will share Land Rover's tradition of offering go-anywhere capability.

The long-held belief about Volvo vehicles is that they wrap you in a protective cocoon that no outside force can penetrate. Whether it be a car approaching from the right, a van moving in from the left, a truck on a head-on course in front or a meteor shower raining down from the sky, just slip into a Volvo and you'll live another day to make yet another car payment regardless of what strikes the vehicle.

One of the worst vehicles offered since the turn of the century was the original Kia Sorento. Sold from 2001 to 2009, it rode a truck-type body-on-frame platform that conspired with dismal suspension tuning to make it flop through turns like "Ishtar" at the box office. Pricing was reasonable, but fuel economy was bad, the interior was noisy, and resale value was minimal. This was one unpleasant vehicle.

Downsizing the engine of the 2015 Lincoln Navigator full-size SUV is a good move, regardless of gas prices. In addition to replacing the V-8 with a V-6, Lincoln gives its full-size luxury SUV a cosmetic freshening plus an upgrade in creature comforts and technology. It still comes in full size or supersize (12-inch longer wheelbase, 15 inches added length) versions with a choice of rear-wheel 4x2 or four-wheel 4x4 drive. Our test vehicle was the full-size 4x4.

The main difference with the midcycle refresh of the 2015 Mercedes-Benz ML400 is a replacement for displacement. The luxury midsize SUV comes standard with a 3.0-liter V-6 twin turbo engine with direct injection, which replaces the displaced 4.6-liter V-8 engine. Accepting that change is constant, the ML will be renamed the GLE next year to fall squarely in the middle of the five SUV sizes offered by Mercedes, from the Hummer-like G to the compact crossover GLA. It ain't nothin' but a g thang, baby, but in this case the G is German for Gelandewagen, not gangsta.

Pay no mind to the Porsche Macan's 18 cubic feet of cargo room, its capacity to carry five adults comfortably and its commanding view of the road. With 340 horsepower and reflexes that would make Catwoman jealous, the Macan S never got the memo that it's not a sports car. Porsche's speed-hunting pedigree shows in every corner of this all-new small SUV.

The postwar period of the mid-20th century changed the automotive landscape. Servicemen returning to these shores brought back the Jeep, which soon symbolized the rugged individualism of America’s open spaces. Across the pond in Britain, Land Rover began a more colonial quest over sand, dirt, rock, road and continents.

For 15 years, the Lexus RX crossover has been the prescription for upscale car shoppers who want more than a sedan and less than a full-size SUV. Refined yet modest, fully capable and fully comfortable, the best-selling midsize has dominated the class and won awards that range from best resale value (Kelley Blue Book) to top safety picks (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety).

There is something about BMWs that remind me of the New York Yankees: They’re always good if not necessarily the best, their owners can be obnoxious and they can arouse juvenile envy. I am a Cubs fan, after all.

The SUV has seen plenty of segmentation since it was first called an SUV in the 80s. Its heyday in the 90s divided the SUV into midsize and full-size, and now we're shoulder deep in the crossover craze.
