Dates ( Chicago Tribune / February 10, 2014)

Q: Could you reprint in the Wednesday food section an old recipe called Walnuss Finger Cookies from the German Village in Columbus, Ohio? It's a very old recipe and my copy is yellow. Haven't made them in awhile and I'm not sure about the amount of flour.

Also if you have one for Date Delight from a Mrs. Steve Attebery, 1209 Hammond Ave, but I don't know the city and state. I have another torn recipe for Frosted Date Balls from a Mrs. Kersey, Wilmington, Delaware.

As I mentioned, these are very old from the looks of what I cut out from the Trib and you may not have any record of them. I'm mostly interested in the walnut finger cookies.

P.S. I do not have a computer so you can't fax it to me. Darn!

A: I could find only one recipe for you, the Date Delight. It was the "$5 Favorite Recipe" in the Jan. 18, 1960 edition of the Chicago Tribune. Winner of $5 was Mrs. Steve Attebery of Superior, Wis. The recipe is below. Just one caveat, it hasn't been kitchen-tested, so proceed with care.

As for the "Walnuss Fingers" and the Frosted Date Balls, perhaps a reader has a copy of the recipe and will be willing to share. I'll let you know.

Date delight

Makes: 6 to 8 servings

"Serve this dessert plan or with whipped cream, either before the delicacy has lost its oven heat or after it has cooled," are the instructions for this recipe, which ran in the Chicago Tribune as the "$5 Favorite Recipe" on Jan. 18, 1960.

1 cup each: sifted all purpose flour; sugar

1 teaspoon baking powder

1/4 teaspoon salt

3 egg whites, beaten stiff

1 cup each: chopped dates, chopped walnuts

1 teaspoon vanilla

Sift flour, sugar, baking powder and salt. Stir into egg whites with dates, nuts, and vanilla. Fill buttered custard cups two-thirds full. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 to 25 minutes.
