* The Virginia Apple Growers Association is sponsoring a statewide poster contest for elementary students.

The posters will be displayed in schools, business establishments and other public places to create an awareness of the importance of good nutrition and healty snacks.

Teaching materials have been distributed to elementary principals and teachers which target the standards of learning of the Virginia Department of Education for the fourth grade. The materials emphasize nutrition and diet. Prizes include $100, and plaque and a finished poster for first place; $50, a plaque and a finished posted for second place; and a plaque and finished poster for third place.

Entries should be received no later than Nov. 1, 1989. Prizes will be awarded no later than Feb. 1, 1990.

* A special platform for youth choral groups is being offered as a Youth Quest competition to be held next month in the Bridge Shops outlet of the Heaven and Earth bookstore chain in Denbigh.

More than 1,000 young singers and performers are expected to join the Quest, a series of four performances of Christian music leading to a program by the eight top groups on Sept. 30.

Each program begins at 7 p.m. in the book store at 490 Denbigh Blvd. with preliminary events on Sept. 15-16, 22-19 and the final performance on Sept. 30.

Entries are being accepted by the Heaven and Earth shops in Denbigh at the Bridge Shops and Patrick Henry Mall and in Hampton at Coliseum Mall.

A three-member panel of store officials will select the eight finalists by their performances in areas such as creativity, choreography, dramatics, singing and staging.

Grand prize for the event will be a contract to appear in a Heven and Earth television commercial for use throughout the chain’s market area. Love gifts will be presented to two tother top groups, $200 for second place and $100 for third place.
