GLOUCESTER — Renate Bumgarner is an award winning European born artist who studied and worked during her early years in Germany.
On almost every Thursday afternoon, Bumgarner is at Gloucester Arts on Main where she is teaching oil painting for beginners and sharing her lifetime experience as a painter and creative individual. She brings her own personal dynamic to her classes, and imparts her intimate understanding of color and composition as well as personal hands-on assistance to her students. During the classes, every student will usually paint the same theme, one which requires the mastery of one of many oil painting techniques thus enabling the student to expand their skills.
After becoming a widow at 29, Bumgarner continued her art studies in Frankfurt and Wurzburg at the Institute of Art. During the World War II, she worked for the U.S. military as an art instructor at the Education Center in Schweinfurt. In 1976, she and her new husband moved to Virginia where she continued her art studies at Thomas Nelson Community College while working with well known artists in the area. She also participated in a variety of workshops offered by professional artists. At this time, she started working with stained glass. Currently, she is painting in oil, watercolor and pastel. She has received many awards at shows and exhibitions.
