Kittiewan Plantation – Historic Home & Museum

Come visit this beautiful, 18th-century plantation and home of the Archeological Society of Virginia in Charles City County, located at: 12104 Weyanoke Road in Charles City). Highlighting collections from the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries and archeological collections from across the Commonwealth, the house and visitor center are a wonderful addition to the James River Plantation tours. New Kent County Fair (Needs Applicants, Volunteers, Car Show Entries, etc.)

The New Kent County Fair Association is preparing for the 42nd Annual County Fair. The fair will be held at Colonial Downs Race track on September 20 – 22. New this year will be "Big Bingo," which offers a jackpot of $600.00. Held inside the building on Friday night, the area will open at 6:00 PM, with the first of the 14 games beginning at 7:00. Entrance fee is $25.00, with each game paying $50.00. You must be 18 years or older to participate. Master Gardener Training

Applications for the 2014 Virginia Cooperative Extension Master Gardener Training Program will be accepted now through October 15, 2013. Classes will meet for three hours Monday and Wednesday mornings from January 6, 2014 to March 31, 2014. Topics include botany, soils, pest and disease management, best practices for lawn care, gardens, flowers, fruits and vegetables, pruning techniques, landscape design and water conservation. The course fee is $150. This program is open to New Kent and Charles City residents. September 18th, 2013: Low-Cost Spay/Neuter Clinic Transport from Regional Animal Shelter; Special low-cost pricing for pet owners participating. The Regional Animal Shelter and the Indian Rivers Humane Society have partnered with the Animal Resource Foundation's Low-Cost spay/neuter clinic in Gloucester. We are able to arrange low-cost, high quality spay/neuter surgeries for dogs and cats, and FREE transportation to and from their clinic. Benefit Golf Tournament (McKendree United Methodist)

West Point Cancer Support Group

The West Point Cancer Support Group offers support to current cancer patients, survivors and their family members/caregivers. The group is comprised of all ages, sexes, types of cancer, etc. and is also open to West Point's surrounding communities. The Group meets the third Monday of each month at 7 pm. The meetings take place at the West Point YMCA located at 3135 King William Avenue.

Alzheimer's Caregiver Support Group

The Alzheimer's Association Caregiver Support Groups are designed to provide emotional, educational and social support for caregivers through regularly scheduled meetings. They help participants develop methods and skills to solve problems. The groups encourage caregivers to maintain their own personal, physical and emotional health, as well as optimally care for the person with dementia. Friends of Dragon Run

Please join Friends of Dragon Run (FODR) at its first General Meeting of the season on Wednesday, September 18, 2013 in the Community Room of the Gloucester County Library, located in the Main Street Shopping Center on Business Rt. 17 (Main Street) at the southern edge of Gloucester Courthouse. The public is invited to this meeting which will begin at 7 PM. Refreshments will be available. Our guest speaker will be Mr. Todd Engelmeyer, a District Biologist for the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. Engelmeyer will address the issue of invasive plants and animals in the watershed, including what is already here, what might arrive in the near future, and what is being done to meet these challenges. Even though Dragon Run is considered to be "pristine," there are already invasive plants and animals altering the environment in and along the river. Blue catfish and phragmites are already there and it is only a matter of time before other species such as nutria start to alter the landscape of the river. Todd received his Master of Science degree from Christopher Newport University. He has been a wildlife biologist for the past 25 years. His district stretches from the Potomac River in the north to the James River in the south, and it also includes the Eastern Shore.

Friends of K&Q Library

Shannon Pritchard will be the guest speaker at the Friends of the King and Queen Library meeting which will be held on Monday, September 23, 2013 at 6:30p.m. He is the author of Collecting the Confederacy and a second book, Confederate Faces in Color, which was published this past June. He has written numerous articles relating to the authentication, care, and conservation of Confederate antiques, including several cover articles for various Civil War periodicals. The meeting will be held at the King and Queen Branch of the Pamunkey Regional Library located at 396 Newtown Road, St. Stephens Church, Virginia.
