NEW KENT – Local authors Lavonne Patterson Allen and Camilla Lewis Tramuel of Allen-N-Tramuel Books, will be the featured speakers at the George W. Watkins Alumni and Scholastic Association Annual Meeting and Celebration on Saturday, October 12th. The meeting will take place at the Cumberland Community Center at 3:00 p.m. During the meeting, the graduating classes of 1943, 1953 and 1963 will be recognized. This year's focus is on, "Our History, Our Heritage". The recently published book by Allen & Tramuel entitled, "The Heritage of African American, New Kent County, Volume I, Early Education, Colored Schools", looks into the education of African Americans from 1865 thru 1970 when all schools integrated. At one time, there were 19 colored schools in the County, one or two in each community. Books will be available at the meeting for purchase. You do not have to be a member of the Alumni Association to attend. All former students (graduates and non-graduates), their descendants, spouses, teachers and others are encouraged to join the Association, become involved, and support Association activities.
The primary mission of the George W. Watkins Alumni and Scholastic Association is to maintain the cultural and educational heritage of the New Kent Training and George W. Watkins Schools through community activities as well as providing an annual scholarship to a graduating senior at New Kent High School.
