Some royal baby love from readers

Astute readers who crack open Saturday's paper (yes, the one with ink and paper) may notice an anomaly: On the letters page, it will be noted that 29 readers weighed in on the birth this week of George Alexander Louis, the first child of Britain's Prince William and his wife Catherine -- and, presumptively, the future King George VII. And yet despite this fairly good number of letters (the topic came in second -- by a long shot -- to the George Zimmerman verdict), we published only one.

Daum: Oh boy! A royal boy.

Meghan Daum: Oh boy! A royal boy.

Hearing the news Tuesday that the new heir to the British throne was a boy, my first thought was of Lady Mary Crawley, heroine of the post-Edwardian-era soap "Downton Abbey." With no male heir left to inherit her family's estate, it falls on her to produce a son. When she becomes pregnant, the show had even the most feminist-minded audience members hoping for a boy. And when it comes to pass, viewers were so elated that even the death of Mary's true love, just moments after he held his son for the first time, seemed of secondary consequence.

Royal baby: Surprisingly sexist merriment

Opinion: Surprisingly sexist merriment

The royal baby made his debut appearance Tuesday, with Will and Kate taking turns posing with their little prince, the future king. It was a sweet and surprisingly down-to-earth moment. But still, even as I found myself unexpectedly cooing at my screen, I couldn’t quite quell a bit of disappointment. I had been hoping for a girl, a future queen.

The (somewhat) breathless wait for Britain's royal baby

As of this writing, there are few duller spots on the Internet than the live cam that Britain's Telegraph newspaper is aiming at the Lindo wing of St. Mary's Hospital in west London, where the duchess of Cambridge is expected to deliver the heir to the British throne ... sometime. Presumably, maybe, sometime soon.
